WE ARE ALL STAKEHOLDERS: CULTURE, POLITICS, AND RADICAL ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE BOARDROOM WITH DATUK SHIREEN MUHIUDEEN

28 November 2024

Thursday, 28 November 2024 - The Centre for Leadership and Professional Development (UM LEAD) held its fifth and last Leadership Talk Series for the year 2024, featuring Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen, former Chairman of Bursa Malaysia and one of UM LEAD’s Distinguished Experts.

She discussed her Amazon #1 Bestselling book of 2023, We Are All Stakeholders: Culture, Politics, and Radical Accountability in the Boardroom, which was recognized by US Entrepreneur magazine as ‘one of the top four books to read for Entrepreneurs who want to break the mold’.

With over 30 years of expertise in fund management, particularly in emerging Asian equity markets, Datuk Shireen is the founder and former Managing Director of Corston-Smith Asset Management, an independent Southeast Asian firm licensed by Malaysia’s Securities Commission.

Her leadership roles have included serving as Non-Executive Chairman of Bursa Malaysia and Independent Non-Executive Director of FELDA. Recognized as one of Asian Investor’s 25 most influential women in asset management in 2011 and among Forbes Asia’s 50 Power Businesswomen in 2014, Datuk Shireen holds an MBA from Loyola Marymount University and a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.

In her book, Datuk Shireen challenges traditional boardroom practices that prioritize short-term profits over stakeholder well-being. She explores key issues like Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) priorities, boardroom power dynamics, and the growing demand for transparency, diversity, and sustainability.

Drawing on her extensive experience, she provides insights to help readers reimagine corporate governance and leadership with accountability, making the book a valuable resource for leaders across all sectors.

The talk was moderated by Mr. Kamarul Bahrin Haron, former Editor-in-Chief of Astro Awani, and featured Datuk Dr. Anis Yusal Yusoff, Executive Director of INPUMA-UM LEAD. Guests from diverse sectors attended to gain insights from Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen, an inspiring leader in the corporate world.
