FOSTERING PURPOSEFUL AND PRINCIPLED FUTURE LEADERS THROUGH THE PURPOSEFUL AND PRINCIPLED LEADERSHIP (PPL) PROGRAMME

On the 14th to 25th October, UM LEAD held the Purposeful and Principled Leadership (PPL) Programme at the Wyndham Grand Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur. This programme brought together both accomplished leaders and aspiring leaders from across public and private sectors to share knowledge, experience, skills, expertise and creativity in grooming purposeful and principled future leaders for the nation. Joined by various speakers sharing insights through presentations, forums and case study discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding through real-world examples and learned the importance of seeing the world through a bigger lens.
This programme immerses participants in the fundamentals of governance, integrity, and leadership specifically in the Malaysian context, with a view to fostering development and growth as purposeful and principled future leaders of the country. Week one emphasised values-driven governance led by none other than UM LEAD’s Director, Datuk Dr. Anis Yusal Yusoff. There were also activities on ethical leadership by Dr. Muhamad Kamal Harun, CEO of Razak School of Government, and a forum of governance and integrity with Prof. Dr. Syed Hamid Aljunid, professor at INCEIF and Ms. Firoz Abdul Hamid, advisor at Top Glove. Emeritus Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdul Rahman Embong, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at IKMAS, led sessions on ethnicity and nation-building, noting that 'ethnicity is a blessing.' Then, Prof. Datuk Dr. Shamsul Amri, Founding Director at KITA, UKM, provided insights into leadership in Malaysia's diverse context with his session on social cohesion.
Week two started with strategic foresight with the CEO of Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MiGHT), Mr. Rushdi Rahim, corporate governance insights from Mr. Megat Mizan Nicholas Denney, former Board Chairman at Kenanga Investment Corporation, and computational thinking led by MDEC’s CT Specialist, Ms. Eleanor Cheah. Dr. Sheila Ramalingan, Deputy Executive Director at UM LEAD, presented a SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) case study, to which the findings will be used for policy making.
Ms. Wong Siew Jiuan from Kenanga Investment Bank expressed her appreciation for the programme, stating, "This is a very well-balanced course, covering relevant topics that encourage us to reflect on our core values and apply the programme’s tools and concepts."
Additionally, Ms. Susiantie Abdul Karim, from the State Implementation Monitoring Unit of the Sarawak State Government shared that "It was an enriching experience! You shared moments with distinguished experts, whose insights and experiences were always imbued with a sense of humility."
The program’s uniqueness is enhanced by a Luncheon Talk, featuring renowned Malaysian leaders: Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen, former Bursa Malaysia Chairman; Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed, former MACC Chief Commissioner; Distinguished Prof. Datuk Dr. Shamsul Amri, Founding Director of UKM’s Institute of Ethnic Studies; Tan Sri Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, former Economic Planning Unit Director-General; Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, former IIUM Rector; Datuk Paul Low, former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department; Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof, former Dewan Rakyat Speaker; and Tan Sri Johan Jaafar, former Utusan Group Editor-in-Chief.
