28 April 2025 - We were delighted to welcome participants from the Bangsamoro Attorney General’s Office (BAGO), Philippines to Universiti Malaya for the Public Policy & Syariah Law Programme—a meaningful exchange on law, governance, and pluralism.
The first day began with welcoming remarks and a thought-provoking talk by Datuk Dr. Anis Yusal Yusoff, Executive Director of INPUMA & UM LEAD, on “Law, Politics & Religion: Pluralism in Malaysian Society”, setting the stage for rich discussions ahead.
In the first session, YBhg. Datuk Yaacob Md. Sam, Former Appeal Court Judge, shared valuable insights on “Syariah Laws & Islamic Jurisprudence in Malaysia,” highlighting the foundations and application of Syariah law in our legal framework.
Participants were then joined by Mdm. Zuriyati Binti Mohd. Noor, Head of Unit at Harmonisation and Co-ordination of Law, Syariah & Harmonisation of Law Division, Attorney General’s Chambers Malaysia, where she shared perspectives on harmonising Syariah with civil law in practice.
The afternoon featured an engaging session by Prof. Dr. Aziz Bari, Member of the Perak State Legislative Assembly (Tebing Tinggi) and former Law Lecturer, on “Harmonising Syariah and Civil Law: Possibilities and Challenges,” examining the legal and constitutional landscape of integration in Malaysia.
The day concluded with a welcoming high-tea reception joined by Professor Dr. Hasniza Zaman Huri, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) of Universiti Malaya to celebrate regional collaboration and shared learning.
